Hey everyone! Welcome to my first blog post on Just Go Left! I’m so excited to be here and share my love for health and fitness with you. It’s not always a fun process, believe me there are plenty of times I’ve wanted to just sit on the couch all day, watch reruns of The Office or Parks and Rec and eat ice cream (and I may have done that a time or two…) but it’s a journey. You’re going to have good and bad days (hopefully the good will outweigh the bad!) So I’m here for you! I’m going to share my fitness and nutrition tips, tricks, ideas, and more but we have plenty of time for that later. For today let’s just get to know each other.

 

Hi! I’m Nicole and I am a wife, soon-to-be mom, beach lover, group fitness instructor and Independent Beachbody Coach. I grew up surrounded by fitness because my mom was a group fitness instructor and I was always involved in dance. Since I got exercise through dance classes growing up, it wasn’t until my first year of college that I actually went to the gym with my mom to workout. I remember thinking "this is going to be a piece of cake!" We were just going to use the elliptical and I figured if my mom could do it I could too. So we get to the gym, find two ellipticals next to each other, climb on and start warming up. Fifteen minutes later I…wanted…to…DIE! I looked over at my mom and she was smiling and said she was just getting warmed up. Warmed up?!?! Was she crazy? I was sweaty, out of breath and I’m sure my face was a nice, deep shade of red. I couldn’t hang. So I decided I would go lift some weights instead. Only problem was I had no idea how to work the machines. I didn’t want to be the person standing there reading the small instructions on the side so, I put everything on the lowest weight and acted liked I knew what I was doing until my mom was done. It was a nightmare. But I kept going back; I mean I couldn’t let my mom show me up. Eventually I was able to build up my endurance and start attending my mom’s spin class. That’s when something unexpected happened; I started to fall in love with the gym and the feeling I got after working out. Flash forward 5 years and I began teaching my own spin classes at Cal State Fullerton while earning my BA in Dance and minor in Kinesiology. From there I couldn’t get enough! I began getting certified in a variety of different formats such as PiYo, Zumba, Turbo Kick, Insanity, barré, and I can’t wait to do more. I can’t imagine my life without fitness. It has made me stronger both mentally and physically.  I currently teach 5 classes a week at local gyms in Southern California. I was teaching 10 but had to cut back because…I’m 7 months pregnant!

 

Now I’ve got the fitness part down, but proper nutrition is something that is still new to me. I used to think if I worked out a lot, ate a salad every once in a while and didn’t drink soda every day that I was being healthy. Well…I was wrong. One day I went to the doctor, she weighed me and I was SHOCKED at the number on the scale. I was 15 pounds heavier than I though I was. Now I know 15 pounds isn’t that much, but when you’re not expecting it, seeing that number go up on the scale beyond a pound or two is not an enjoyable experience. I was in denial at first, thought that it couldn’t be true because I worked out all the time. Shortly after a friend approached me about trying the 21 Day Fix program with her through Beachbody. It focuses on daily workouts along with portion control, eating clean and drinking a daily wellness shake, Shakeology. I figured it couldn’t hurt so I bought the program. After the 21 days were over it was like a whole new world opened up. I couldn’t believe how much I had lied to myself about my “healthy eating”. I realized I had been addicted to carbs, sugar and coffee and was definitely not getting enough protein or veggies in a day. This program completely changed my eating habits so I was finally consuming the right balance of foods and getting all the nutrients my body was craving. In 21 days I lost the 15 pounds, but more that that I gained self-confidence, more energy (no more 3 p.m. coffee breaks), slept better at night, and knowledge that I knew I had to share. Which is why I became a coach with Beachbody. So here I am, a year later and want to continue to spread health and fitness to as many people as I can because everyone deserves to live a healthy and happy life.
