How to Get Motivated to Work Out! 5 Tips to Get Your Buns in Gear!

Nicole Hagy FitNicole HagyComment

It’s Sunday night, you just had a full weekend with some not-so-healthy choices and are finishing it off with a bowl of ice cream. {Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked would be my go-to} You feel gross so you tell yourself, “I’m going to be good this week…. I’m going to go to the gym tomorrow, eat healthy all week, and get back on track!” Then Monday comes and you’re too tired from work to go to the gym or grocery store, but you say “That’s ok, I’ll do it tomorrow, Tuesday is a better day to start anyway.” Then Tuesday comes and goes… and Wednesday…. and before you know it, it’s the weekend and you never made it to the gym. We have ALL been there; good intentions, motivated on Sunday night and then you get caught up in your normal daily routine and working out gets pushed to the back of your mind. So how do you break that vicious cycle? I’m not going to lie, it’s going to take some work, but the cycle can be broken!

Here are my 5 tips to help you get motivated and stick to your workouts!

1. Set a Schedule

Think of working out as an important meeting with yourself. You wouldn’t cancel a meeting with your boss so why cancel one with yourself?  You don’t need an hour; you can get just as great of a workout in 30 min as you can in an hour. It’s all about intensity! Every Sunday look at your week ahead and block out the times you are going to workout.

2. Try Something New

Not everyone enjoys spin class or going for a run and that’s ok! We are all different and what works for one person won’t work for another. There is no wrong workout, the key is to find what you enjoy doing. So get out there and try new things! Most gyms give out free class passes so take advantage of it. Not into going to classes? No problem! Try out different gyms, outside or at home workouts, videos, etc. Check out Pinterest, YouTube, at home workout programs; there are so many resources available to you!

3. Go Shopping

Yes I said shopping! When I buy new workout clothes I CAN’T WAIT to put them on and show off how good they look. Just like with every day clothes it makes you feel more confident, excited, and alive. So treat yourself! Buy a new top, sports bra, head band, fun/crazy pants, and don’t forget about having supportive (and of course cute) workout shoes. Some of my favorite places to shop for workout clothes are Lorna Jane, Target, Sports Authority and Nordstrom Rack.

4. Exercise in the Morning

Get it over with! I know waking up earlier than you have to is not necessarily your idea of a good morning, but if you workout in the morning it has many positive benefits.

1) It’s a relief knowing that you already got your workout in for the day

2) It gives you an energy boost

3) It releases endorphins, which make you happy so you start your workday on a good note

4) It sets you up for making healthy food choices the rest of the day

5. Visualize

I know this may sounds silly, but hey it works. Think about how great you will feel after you workout. Accomplished? Healthy? Energized? Ready to take on the world?  Knowing how you will feel after you complete something will motivate you to do what feels uncomfortable in the moment.

Bonus Tip!

Drink a Pre-Workout

To be honest, I’m still new to pre-workouts. I had just started drinking them right before I got pregnant and really enjoyed it. (I have had to stop for the time being but will drink them again in the future.) My husband though drinks a pre-workout on the mornings he wants to go to the gym. It gives him an energy boost and gets him focused on his workout without a crash later on. Drink it 30 min before you want to workout and it will give you energy to hit the gym! With that said, I personally wouldn’t rely on drinking them every day only because I would prefer to have self-motivation than a drink, but they can be a HUGE help on those days where you are really struggling. Just make sure you do some research, as you should with all supplements, because many companies add unnecessary and unhealthy fillers. Here are two pre-workouts that I stand behind: Energy & Endurance and Performance Energize!

I hope some of these tips help you get out there and get moving! Do you have any additional tips that help you get motivated to exercise?
