I won't lie you guys, it's been a rough few months here in Atlanta. Lots of change, lots of adjusting, lots of stress, lots of exhaustion and did I mention change? From someone who doesn't handle change well, I've found myself a little down in the dumps and a lot worn out. When I get like this, joy is often hard for me to find, I have to work extra hard to insert it into my day, in the smallest ways possible. Today, I'm sharing tips on how to add more joy to your days....you know, in case you have any issues with change, or terrible, no good, very bad days.
ONE: TAKE A WALK
When I'm feeling particularly overwhelmed I grab Gatsby's leash and head outside. Not only does this clear my head and give me some exercise but I find that I'm usually happier and more relaxed afterwards. It doesn't have to be a long walk: sometimes just a quick jaunt around the neighborhood can lift my spirits. Separate yourself from what's dragging you down and let yourself soak in the outdoors for a little bit.
TWO: TREAT YO'SELF
On Fridays, I pay my bills, and set aside a little bit to treat myself with. After a long week nothing cheers me up more than rewarding myself with a little pick-me-up. I'm not saying go all out and get yourself a massive, budget-busting present but something as small as a latte from Starbucks or a manicure/pedicure can do the trick. Take the time to make yourself feel special.
I'm learning to set boundaries when it comes to blogging/life. Yes, I want to be more intentional about my blog and my writing but I also want to be more intentional about spending quality time with my loved ones in real life, too. Last weekend I stayed off social media (and my phone for that matter) for most of the weekend and found myself completely refreshed afterwards.
FOUR: BRING JOY TO SOMEONE ELSE'S DAY
Sometimes, doing something for someone I love brings more joy to my day. Something as simple as leaving an "I love you" note or sending a surprise Starbucks gift card by email (my favorite thing to do for friends) makes me happier because I know I've made someone smile.
FIVE: CRANK UP THE MUSIC
I love putting on a happy playlist when I'm having a particularly rough day. My go to music for a rough day? Music from my childhood: *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20, Vertical Horizon, Counting Crowns. Hearing songs that bring back happy (and youthful) memories instantly turn my frown upside down.
Your turn: how do you add more joy to your day??
