Enjoy Your Holiday!

Ahh Labor Day weekend….such a bittersweet time. It signals the end of summer but the beginning of all things pumpkin, fall, and not to mention the holidays we have just around the corner! I love this time of year and I don’t know about you but I’m ready for it! It’s been sooo hot in Ventura this summer and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a cool winter. 

For me Labor Day weekend normally means one last hurrah filled with the beach or pool, BBQs, and alcohol. {Ok so no alcohol for me this year, but I know it’s probably on your list for the weekend!} So how do you still enjoy all those end of summer treats without gaining an extra 10 pounds and killing your diet? I’m telling you it can be done! With a little planning and strategy you can still have fun, not feel deprived, and not completely fall off the healthy life wagon.

First!

 When you wake up in the morning I want you to start your day with water. Before coffee, before breakfast, have 16oz of water. Your body is dehydrated after sleeping and you need to replenish it. Plus drinking water will fire up your metabolism, flush out toxins and may even help you eat less during the day. Then I want you to continue to drink water throughout the day. AT LEAST half your body weight in ounces.

Second! 

Get a quick workout in! And while you’re at it, get your friends in on it with you. It’s much more enjoyable and motivating when you can do a workout together and then you won’t feel as guilty when you enjoy some drinks later on.

Third! 

Flan ahead. Pack healthy snacks with you like an apple or almonds to hold you over, or if you’re heading to a party eat a salad before you go. That way you are not showing up hungry and immediately grabbing those chips. And speaking of chips don’t stand near them! When I am by a bowl of chips and salsa I eat… and eat… and eat without even thinking about it. If you can give yourself some space then you are less likely to over-do it.

Finally.... 

It’s ok to have some drinks. Just be picky about your selections, maybe stay away from the beer or pick light/low-cal options. Have red wine, sip it slow to make it last longer or make some skinny cocktails! Need ideas? Here are some recipes from the Fixate cookbook

If you do indulge a little too much don’t beat yourself up! It’s ok. We all do it. Don’t let it get you down. Just get back to your healthy lifestyle the next week.
